Relaxation



A few weeks ago, a client of mine told me that he usually sits at his computer for an average of 18 hours a day, so engrossed in his work. I asked him if he actually ate any food or drank any water during this time. In his answer, I recollect that a banana was mentioned as well as a bottle of water.

He had come to see me with what his GP had affectionately nicknamed, “Writer’s Cramp,” a condition that falls under the genre of repetitve strain injury – RSI and one that affects writers, those of us that are governed by the mouse in our daily lives, musicians and many more.

After some initial assessments and observation, we deduced that when his wrist is in a certain position, he gets a lot of pain. We discussed his lifestyle in a little detail and one of the main things that was missing as part of his lifestyle, was ‘Relaxation.’

In a 40 minute period of sitting at your computer, do you take short breaks of between 3-5 minutes. So that could mean, continuing to work, but giving your eyes a break from the screen. Posture is also something that can go out the window when we are absorbed in a particular activity online or at our desks brainstorming, managing paperwork and so on.

Are you sitting in a comfortable chair with your feet on the ground or on a foot rest. Or are you in bed with your laptop on your lap and slouched?

Hmmmh….. I’ve done all these things myself and the exhaustion I’ve felt from a lack of proper breaks in between tasks has encouraged me to be more aware of my body and my posture and to take some breaks in between my more stationary activities. And accepting that relaxation is just as valid a past time.
