Research

Do your research! Research to me is the key to most things. And this is something that was always at the fabric of my being, but somehow got waylaid in the romanticism and overwhelm of being a ‘business owner.’

The world wide web holds a lot of keys to information and you can discover a lot of things about a person or company from the comments they make on forums to their CV, their ethos, where they have been, who they have worked for. Even the ones that claim privacy and anonymity – what are they hiding? (If the nature of their work is sensitive, there are still ways to loop around and find the information, in this information age).

Sometimes the types of companies that a person has chosen to work for may be indicative of a particular type of ethos or philosophy or they are just intent on making a living. It’s all there for you to see. Have they had a bad day today? And if so, how do they handle it, is it out of character for them to throw a wobbly? :-)

What is the essence of this person, are they someone, you can potentially trust? Do you brave a one to one meeting, Skype call or chat and then ask yourself, is this a company or a person you would love to represent you, recommend you and your company? Or who infact could be one of your trusted advisors? Or even become a dear friend? Do they get you without you having to say a word? Do they listen to you? Do you listen to them? The sighs in conversation are a dead giveaway, you know? Body language, even more so – hint: watch your body language around someone, who interprets and analyses movement.lol. :-) x

What types of questions do they ask you about ‘you’ and then about your portrayal of you? Do they lead you down the path of your business being an extension of you and your lifestyle? What do you offer in return? Is this a two-way conversation? Are you both paying attention to each other? Bingo!

Case Study

Digressing ever so slightly about using the research tool…. Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to check in with my twitter buddies and at that moment, came across an article by Tammy Camp. She was highlighting her latest blog and her recent trip to Kuwait and used poetic language in the headline, that I inevitably respond to and love. I knew instantly that she was going to have a ‘go’ about ‘attitudes’ towards the Middle East, but I was prepared and couldn’t wait to read what she had to say. The value in what I was reading stemmed from the fact that she has spent time travelling to a variety of places. She travelled to Kuwait, respected the customs of the people and the language and quietly observed everything around her to form her own conclusions.

Tammy Camp is a young 29 year old woman, who has seemingly come out of nowhere, but forged a path quietly at first, for herself as an SEO marketing expert and in the last few years, CEO of a large co-operation as well as being a serial entrepreneur, advisor, Kite surfer and travel adventurer – she Moves and for someone like me who loves to participate in the observation and analysis of all Movement, I pay attention to how she Moves through her life, whether it’s in her business pursuits, her travel adventures or her adored hobby of Kite surfing. I love this kind of value as it indicates to me that Tammy Camp is an all rounder and someone I would love to know, whether it be virtually or personally. It’s a real challenge to place Tammy in a box and people like her intrigue and interest me. She focuses on the myriad of interests that she has with a ‘Movement-led focus,’ so I sit up and take notice. Irrespective of the grace of our ages, I can learn lots from this incredibly gifted young woman.

Lessons Learnt

When a small business, start up or entrepreneur appears on the horizon in the future and establishes itself as a ‘twitter,’ ‘facebook’ or ‘social media’ expert, or any kind of expert, then I will be looking for their track record based on the content of their blog (and believe me you can tell when it’s content that they have written themselves or that has been outsourced) and perhaps some of the threads and comments they have made in other social media networks. I will also look at their ‘portfolio’ or ‘testimonials.’  Following on from this, I then enter a banter of  exciting dialogue and an exchange of ideas, irrespective of whether we agree or disagree, it’s still a mutual exchange and growing respect for the other person. Yes it’s time-consuming, but I would rather know who I’m shaking hands with than nose-dive into a situation where I’m stuck with designs for a website that I will never use or marketing material that says nothing to my client’s except how pretty they are or an uncomfortable situation where my trust for the other person is inevitably shot to pieces. Wouldn’t you?

Expert Or Specialist?

Why have I established myself as a specialist rather than an expert?

For the reason’s that go hand in hand with the amount of responsibility that comes with being a so-called expert and all the numerous lessons I have learnt on this 15 month Journey. :-)

I’m a Dance and Movement Specialist with a clinical nursing qualification attached. I can tell you what I see in terms of how you walk in to greet me and how you sit down and then offer you some handy hints on how to improve that niggling back ache or shoulder pain or headache that has been bothering you for months.  I will simulate conditions that have led to your current condition, observe and inform you about choices in movement and simpler and kinder ways to treat your body.

I will also apply a combination of movement modalities that either leave you singing like a canary (for a second) or encourage you to have the best nights rest in months. Interlaced with that is my clinical ‘expertise’ and how my training as a nurse has given me the foundations of looking at the body ‘holistically’ in terms of all the body’s systems and how this can be related to a healthier  and more balanced life through my favourite past time, Movement.

Have I sold you a line or a gold pen with all the nuggets? As with all things, only take from this, what serves you. :-) x

Enjoy your day.

Many blessings.x
