5 New Year Health Tips

I have found that starting the New Year with a new year’s resolution is a recipe for setting myself up to fail!
So instead, I reflect on my health issues of the previous year and think about some nice simple steps that will encourage me to be kind to myself.

Tip 1

After the over-indulgence that is inevitable at Christmas, I’m inclined to detox with natural juices like a mixture of carrot, apple and celery and herbal teas such as Fennel and Mint. Fennel and Mint are great for solving flatulence and settling the stomach after a heavy meal. Maintaining hydration and drinking plenty of water and natural juices and tea is a beautiful way to nourish the body.

Tip 2

If you can, avoid eating a heavy meal and stop, once you are full! This takes a bit of discipline, but I have found that it’s great as I still feel nourished and able to move around without feeling tired and lethargic.

Tip 3

Some gradual steps into the world of exercise are usually what I advise and often get raised eyebrows about. Some people believe that if they are not sweating profusely and panting for dear life, that they haven’t really exercised. Ok, there is a place for improving one’s cardiovascular system, but to be frank after the indulgence of Christmas, I would really take it nice and easy.

Tip 4

Rather than walk for an hour and then the next exercise is 10 weeks down the line, because you are knackered or feeling guilty, 15 minutes 3 times a week is a lot easier to commit to. Think about it, you are more likely to find 15 minutes in your day away from your desk or office to go outside, than 1 hour, which you may find challenging to justify, right?

Tip 5

And if you would like some tips on pacing your walk, try the walking challenge. And perhaps you may also like to try the 2 litre a day water challenge too?

Have a Fantastic and Healthy New Year Ahead.

Many Blessings
:-)

Pilates Survey For Reigate, Surrey

Liz&Jo

At last, I’m back blogging again. Hello everyone, it’s good to be back up on the horse again.

I’m currently doing some market research for my company Passion 4 Life and would really appreciate help from the businesses and local people of the Reigate area. The Pilates Survey is here for all you enthusiasts.

Next week on the 30th of October 2009, Regus in Reigate, will be encouraging all the businesses here (including Passion 4 Life) and residents of the local vicinity, to wear pink in aid of raising awareness of breast cancer. The wearitpink campaign has been ongoing during the month of October and so here at Castle Court, there will be a flurry of activity. The great staff, Jo Pedly – customer Services lady extra-ordinaire will be teaming up with Centre Manager Aimee Leach on the evening of Thursday 29th of October 2009 to bake some cakes in Jo’s home. Also Gabrielle Hemingway, who works in the Finance department for Tillingbourne Foods Ltd, on the second floor of Castle Court and is always nourishing us all with her incredible deserts, will also be baking up a storm, too. All the proceeds from the day, will go to breast cancer Campaign – the charity. I will be offering some Pilates & Health Tips and a go on the wonderful Pilates Apparatus – the Combo Chair.

All the staff here have been so kind to me since I’ve been working here. It was in my role of working for a dear friend’s company, that I made a decision to have an official address  for Passion 4 Life, here at Regus in Reigate. It’s been wonderful getting to know some of the small business owners here and chatting with them in the kitchen where we collect for our hot drinks during the busy working day.

On the 30th October 2009, if you are in the Reigate area, pop along to the offices at 41 London Road and meet the staff and sample the delights, the proceeds of which are going to a very worthy cause.

“Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.”

Research

Do your research! Research to me is the key to most things. And this is something that was always at the fabric of my being, but somehow got waylaid in the romanticism and overwhelm of being a ‘business owner.’

The world wide web holds a lot of keys to information and you can discover a lot of things about a person or company from the comments they make on forums to their CV, their ethos, where they have been, who they have worked for. Even the ones that claim privacy and anonymity – what are they hiding? (If the nature of their work is sensitive, there are still ways to loop around and find the information, in this information age).

Sometimes the types of companies that a person has chosen to work for may be indicative of a particular type of ethos or philosophy or they are just intent on making a living. It’s all there for you to see. Have they had a bad day today? And if so, how do they handle it, is it out of character for them to throw a wobbly? :-)

What is the essence of this person, are they someone, you can potentially trust? Do you brave a one to one meeting, Skype call or chat and then ask yourself, is this a company or a person you would love to represent you, recommend you and your company? Or who infact could be one of your trusted advisors? Or even become a dear friend? Do they get you without you having to say a word? Do they listen to you? Do you listen to them? The sighs in conversation are a dead giveaway, you know? Body language, even more so – hint: watch your body language around someone, who interprets and analyses movement.lol. :-) x

What types of questions do they ask you about ‘you’ and then about your portrayal of you? Do they lead you down the path of your business being an extension of you and your lifestyle? What do you offer in return? Is this a two-way conversation? Are you both paying attention to each other? Bingo!

Case Study

Digressing ever so slightly about using the research tool…. Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to check in with my twitter buddies and at that moment, came across an article by Tammy Camp. She was highlighting her latest blog and her recent trip to Kuwait and used poetic language in the headline, that I inevitably respond to and love. I knew instantly that she was going to have a ‘go’ about ‘attitudes’ towards the Middle East, but I was prepared and couldn’t wait to read what she had to say. The value in what I was reading stemmed from the fact that she has spent time travelling to a variety of places. She travelled to Kuwait, respected the customs of the people and the language and quietly observed everything around her to form her own conclusions.

Tammy Camp is a young 29 year old woman, who has seemingly come out of nowhere, but forged a path quietly at first, for herself as an SEO marketing expert and in the last few years, CEO of a large co-operation as well as being a serial entrepreneur, advisor, Kite surfer and travel adventurer – she Moves and for someone like me who loves to participate in the observation and analysis of all Movement, I pay attention to how she Moves through her life, whether it’s in her business pursuits, her travel adventures or her adored hobby of Kite surfing. I love this kind of value as it indicates to me that Tammy Camp is an all rounder and someone I would love to know, whether it be virtually or personally. It’s a real challenge to place Tammy in a box and people like her intrigue and interest me. She focuses on the myriad of interests that she has with a ‘Movement-led focus,’ so I sit up and take notice. Irrespective of the grace of our ages, I can learn lots from this incredibly gifted young woman.

Lessons Learnt

When a small business, start up or entrepreneur appears on the horizon in the future and establishes itself as a ‘twitter,’ ‘facebook’ or ‘social media’ expert, or any kind of expert, then I will be looking for their track record based on the content of their blog (and believe me you can tell when it’s content that they have written themselves or that has been outsourced) and perhaps some of the threads and comments they have made in other social media networks. I will also look at their ‘portfolio’ or ‘testimonials.’  Following on from this, I then enter a banter of  exciting dialogue and an exchange of ideas, irrespective of whether we agree or disagree, it’s still a mutual exchange and growing respect for the other person. Yes it’s time-consuming, but I would rather know who I’m shaking hands with than nose-dive into a situation where I’m stuck with designs for a website that I will never use or marketing material that says nothing to my client’s except how pretty they are or an uncomfortable situation where my trust for the other person is inevitably shot to pieces. Wouldn’t you?

Expert Or Specialist?

Why have I established myself as a specialist rather than an expert?

For the reason’s that go hand in hand with the amount of responsibility that comes with being a so-called expert and all the numerous lessons I have learnt on this 15 month Journey. :-)

I’m a Dance and Movement Specialist with a clinical nursing qualification attached. I can tell you what I see in terms of how you walk in to greet me and how you sit down and then offer you some handy hints on how to improve that niggling back ache or shoulder pain or headache that has been bothering you for months.  I will simulate conditions that have led to your current condition, observe and inform you about choices in movement and simpler and kinder ways to treat your body.

I will also apply a combination of movement modalities that either leave you singing like a canary (for a second) or encourage you to have the best nights rest in months. Interlaced with that is my clinical ‘expertise’ and how my training as a nurse has given me the foundations of looking at the body ‘holistically’ in terms of all the body’s systems and how this can be related to a healthier  and more balanced life through my favourite past time, Movement.

Have I sold you a line or a gold pen with all the nuggets? As with all things, only take what serves you and discard the rest. :-) x

Enjoy your day.

Many blessings.x

Extra, Extra, Read All About It! Part 1: Free Gift or The Truth?

Off To A New Studio
Today, I’ve been going through some emails as I waited for my Pilates equipment to leave the studio heading for Ingrid’s studio in Kensington Olympia. I was just tempted with the above headline as I recall how newspaper vendors, sold their paper’s, in previous times, by shouting the above slogan at the top of their voices in order to sell papers. :-)

On that note, here are the extra’s that I want to share about some of the lessons that I’ve learned from closing my studio, to  refocus my business and design a model that suits my values and lifestyle for the future.

Filters And Self Confidence

Almost every business related teleclass and marketing email, I have received in the last 15 months focuses on the 3/4 biggest mistakes people make, when attempting to get new clients and the 10 biggest mistakes that businesses make when selecting an SEO company, branding company, marketing expert, etc. Negative language seems to be a real headliner and sound bite to our brains. A bit like the news infact. We would rather turn on the television or news and listen to ‘doom and gloom,’ than watch our favourite laugh a minute comedy, Monty Python or John Cleese prancing about in ‘a fish called wanda,’ especially here in the UK.

It occurs to me that often, it’s very demoralising to have one’s nose rubbed in the worst possible things that can go wrong (especially if they have) as opposed to focusing on the things that are right or that have worked for a particular person or situation. And yes critical incidence and reflection is necessary as well as ‘lessons to learn.’ These are indisputable. Lessons learned are brilliant as long as it’s an acronym for an analysis of what’s really going on.

Yes I can tell you stories about what went wrong with my business and why and you can perhaps relate to some of it, but how would that really help you move forward positively?

What Do Your Clients Really Want?

Jack Canfield is notoriously clear on this and I’ll paraphrase, “……everyone goes through something challenging in their life,  it’s called, So What?”  Most people are focused on themselves and their needs and could really care less about what you are going through, unless they are a family member or friend that is close to you and even then, sorry to say, it’s a bit too close for them to take on board. I often have to laugh when I listen to Jack Cranfield’s rendition of this as it’s quite true, really. Sometimes, the truth is just a bit too hard-hitting and in our faces, but it’s there. Sometimes, people have trouble discerning what they want and as an ‘expert’ it’s a good idea to help your client focus on specifics.

Blood Sweat, Tears And Desperation

Small businesses and especially those working extremely hard and by themselves are ‘desperate’ to get clients through their door paying for their services or product so as to maintain a continuous flow of cash that keeps the business afloat and the bills being paid. In their bid to do so, they sell continuously and talk about themselves and nobody likes being sold to, by someone who’s focus is just about ‘selling,’ rather than about focusing on ‘the potential client’ and ‘their needs’ first. No-one wants to hear your tales of doom and gloom either, as they can turn on the radio for that next episode of the ‘credit crunch’ crunching into oblivion at an interest rate never before experienced in history. That desperate need creates more of what you focus on, I guess, right?

Scenario.

***I recall a networking event I went to early this year, where I was listening to a conversation between 2 fellow networkers, when a gentleman stepped in between me and my fellow networkers. We each took a step back, to accomodate him and he then started to talk to me about healthy chocolate, without introducing himself. When I responded politely but unfavourably, he walked off in a huff. And later on, I looked around and saw him sitting down looking rather miserable. Perhaps, he had encountered less politeness in his bid to close his sale. Of course, one could argue that being a bit ‘too laid back’ may also be the antithesis of this, so finding the balance of working your socks off whilst maintaining a healthy cash flow is one that I leave to the experts of this field, for advice :-) x ***

Free Gifts Of Value Or the Truth?

The free teleseminars and webinars are a ploy to get clients to pay for the real ‘sale’ of the 10 best ways to target clients, whilst highlighting the 10 worst mistakes in business. I would rather be told the truth than half way through the seminar, teleclass, webinar or presentation, there is this whole sales schpeil, wouldn’t you? Or would you rather just go for it because it says ‘free’? :-) Be honest. My only gripe here,  is that I have already spent my precious time and energy focusing on things that have done little for my confidence, so why would I want to spend another hour having my nose rubbed in it all over again?

What Can We Learn From Other Nations?

I know this can seem a bit confrontational, but I’ve observed this in human nature in most of the countries that I’ve visited around the world. The nation’s that are reputedly criticised for certain things, business included, ‘all being about the money,’ such as India and China have made massive strides and growths in their economy, education and forward thinking especially when it comes to business and they do exceptionally well wherever they go, because of their mindset and focus.  I  have been so fortunate as to spend quite a bit of time in India and I admire my Indian, Chinese and Thai friends for their innovation and ‘get up and go’ attitude. Of course their system is slightly more ‘flexible’ than ours at times.

Whilst people and companies in the west are ‘slagging’ these other countries off in one breath, some of these companies are swindling their clients in the next breath, whilst reminding them that they signed a contract that was supposed to save them money in the long run, (no-one can predict what tomorrow will be) whether the service or product is null and void, they still have to pay for it – no flexibility whatsoever and a real crying shame.  So how do you figure out if you are being sold a line or a gold pen, even by reputable companies or people?

To be continued…….in ……Part 2.

New Beginnings

Photograph by Chris Nash

Photograph by Chris Nash

So at last after a few days of quiet reflection, I felt it was about time to share that I will be closing my studio at the end of July 2009.

My decision to do this has been based on lots of challenges with regards to running a business with a focus on things that ‘drive me insane,’ as opposed to things that drive my passion. Passion was the primary reason for starting a company in the first place and the Passion 4 Life company lives on. :-)

I will continue to write blogs and find new and inspiring ways to get your imaginations working, so that’s still very much on the cards. I will also be looking at what drives and motivates my love of all things movement based and putting something new together in the coming months. So watch this space….. :-)

I wanted to thank all my lovely readers :-) , friends, family and supporters :-) over the last 15 months and especially a big high five to Max Vogler, Ilka Higgs and Annika Jordan for having the wisdom to inspire, question and encourage me through it all. You guys are fabulous and I love you. :-) :-) :-)

So, onwards and upwards to new beginnings. :-)

Many Blessings.x
